Friends of Rickerby Park
The friends are a voluntary organisation that spends a lot of time looking after the superb stretch of parkland on the Stanwix side of the River Eden in Carlisle. Their mission is to raise awareness of & promote Rickerby Park as a quality Greenspace in Carlisle at the same time as working towards Green Flag status.
The park was opened as a memorial to the victims of the 1st World War 14 – 18. Reaching upstream along the banks of the River Eden from Eden Bridge, you can follow the river for nearly 3/4 of a mile. Rickerby Park is parkland in the Victorian landscape style and there is probably very little natural ground or vegetation still in place, but what a great open space to have next to the heart of the city! The Hadrian’s Wall National Trail runs through the it as well, crossing the “suspension” bridge, which is actually a cantilever bridge ;-). From this wrought iron marvel, you may occasionally see otters, kingfishers and herons!
The Friends work as partners with Carlisle City Council & a few other community groups & agencies to keep the park in good shape. They try to encourage community involvement in the Park’s management, activities & events.
They’re always looking for fresh blood to help out so get in touch!
